How Can swelling And Numbness In The Foot Be Treated?

I broke my ankle when I was 16 playing softball. I am now 56. It was a bad break with dislocation and needed a pin in out side part of the ankle. The pin was removed 6 months after break. It has been ok till about a year ago. Now I have significant pain when I walk. I get burning on lower foot, swelling, numbness on outer aspect of foot, affecting the little toe and the one beside. It goes away when I sit...maybe a bit of a twang and throbbing but mostly good. Scan show arthritis. I am worried an ankle replacement or fusion will affect my work which requires me to walk for 4 hours a day. Also affect driving......any suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are more consistent with neuropathic pain.

As a first line management, you can take analgesics like Paracetamol or Aceclofenac for pain relief.

If symptoms persist it is better to consult an orthopedician and get an MRI scan to rule ou tendon or ligament involvement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
